President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigeria’s external financial position strengthened significantly in 2025, providing a stronger buffer for the economy and boosting investor confidence.
In a New Year message, the President attributed the improvement to careful monetary management.
“Supported by sound monetary policy management, our foreign reserves stood at $45.4 billion as of December 29, 2025,” Tinubu said.
He explained that the reserve level gives the country room to withstand shocks.
“This provides a substantial buffer against external shocks for the Naira,” he said.
The President expressed optimism that the position would improve further.
“We expect this position to strengthen further in the new year,” he said.
The President also disclosed a sharp rise in foreign direct investment, describing it as a sign of renewed confidence.
“Foreign direct investment is also responding positively,” he said.
“In the third quarter of 2025, FDI rose to $720 million, up from $90 million in the preceding quarter,” a development he said reflects growing trust in Nigeria’s economic direction.
He said that international rating agencies share that confidence.
Nigeria’s reforms, he said, have been “consistently affirmed and applauded” by global credit rating agencies, including Moody’s, Fitch and Standard & Poor’s.
