The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Onnoghen, who has been in acting capacity for over three months, answered various questions from the lawmakers before his confirmation.

Describing the screening exercise as a milestone, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, commended the erudition of the judge who pledged to introduce reforms that will reposition the judiciary.

He spoke on the independence of the judiciary, corruption on the bench, establishment of special courts for corruption trial and respect for court rulings.

Onnoghen’s name was forwarded to the Senate on February 8 for confirmation as a substantive CJN by acting President Yemi Osinbajo, following the recommendedation by the National Judicial Council.

He is the first CJN from Southern Nigeria since Jusrice Ayo Irikefe 30 years ago.

Onnoghen, 67, will be sworn-in by the President, or the Acting President, as the 20th Chief Justice of Nigeria.
