Amidst the call by lawmakers to rejig the security architecture in the country and fire the service chiefs, President Muhammadu Buhari has gone ahead to set up a committee to periodically review the security situation in the country.
Analysts believe that the new move called to question the efficiency of the service chiefs, the inspector general of police and other security chiefs in the country.
Senate and House of Representatives had last week called for a drastic action to be taken by the executive to tackle the deteriorating security situation in the country.
Fielding questions from State House correspondents, after a meeting with President Buhari, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila though refused to name members of the committee, however said it will include members of the executive, legislature and the ruling party.
He said the committee will help proffer lasting solutions to the entire security structure in the country.
The Speaker who was joined by the Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan said they believed that something drastic needed to be done under the present situation adding that removing the service chiefs may not entirely address the crippling security situation in the country.
Lawan told reporters that the meeting with President Buhari was fruitful adding that the President was also very worried about the deteriorating security situation in the country.
He said that the need to increase funding for the security services especially the police was also discussed with the president stressing that it was important to take the welfare of security personnel and their families very seriously as that would help boost their commitment in crime fighting.
