Nigerian striker, Kelechi Iheanacho’s second half goal saved Manchester City from an embarrassing home defeat against Southampton on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men who had not won in four games in all competitions settled for a 1-1 draw and returned to the top of the Premier League on goal difference.
The Nigerian star came on as a half-time substitute to score the equaliser which cancelled out Nathan Redmond’s 27th-minute opener.
Southampton took the lead when Redmond pounced on a back pass from John Stones intended for Vincent Kompany and rounded Claudio Bravo.
Stones thought that he had made amends shortly afterwards when he connected with Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick, only to be denied by an offside decision against Sergio Aguero.
Iheanacho replaced De Bruyne at half-time and within 10 minutes had equalised, meeting Leroy Sane’s low, left-wing centre.
City threatened a second with Ikay Gundogan and Iheanacho thwarted by Forster but City, who move on to 20 points along with Arsenal and Liverpool, had to settle for a point.
Iheanacho said after the match that: “We did our best but unfortunately we couldn’t win.
“It wasn’t a good start, but we came back well. We’re playing well still, but not quite getting the chances. It’s football. You can win and you can lose.”
