The first executive president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, would be buried on Saturday.
Shagari died Friday evening at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.
He was 93 years old.
His dead was announced by his grandson, Bello Shagari, on his Twitter handle.
Shagari’s death was also confirmed by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state.
The deceased was elected president in 1979 on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN), and led the country from 1979 to 1983.
He was removed in December 1983 via a military intervention that produced Major General Muhammadu Buhari as Head of State and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces.
